A POBRA DE BURÓN (A FONSAGRADA, LUGO)

A visit to this small hamlet in the nearby of A Fonsagrada, municipality of the Lugo province, at the northeast, very close to Asturias.

Access:

From Lugo along secondary road LU530, and just at the entrance of A Fonsagrada, you will see a petrol station on your left, so take the LU740 to Vilardíaz. Driving down to the valley you have views over Pobra de Burón. A couple of kilometres ahead is the deviation or, another option, follow this road and after crossing the hamlet of San Pedro de Abaixo ("hórreo" - elevated granary over columnns on your right) is another narrow road to Pobra de Burón.

Find the place to park, it's no easy, and just walk along the "avenues" like Lenin Av. or Mariscal Zukov Av, squares like Lenin, or Igor Stravinski. Yes, I know, funny names in this surprising galician landscape. This place was the capital of the municipality of Burón until XIX, whe this territory passed to the region of Galicia, and the capital was moved to A Fonsagrada due to better connections.

One of the ways of Saint James crosses Pobra de Burón, that one called "Camino Primitivo" (Primitiv way).

Besides the "hórreos" you will find the ruins of the Earl of Altamira's castle, dominating the hamlet.

Unha visita á pequena poboación da Pobra de Burón (ou Proba de Burón, como veredes nos letreiros) no concello da Fonsagrada (Lugo).

Acceso:

Dende Lugo pola estrada LU530, ao chegar á entrada da Fonsagrada hai unha gasolineira á esquerda, colledes a estrada LU740, dirección Vilardíaz. Xa na baixada teredes vistas do val coa Pobra de Burón e os restos da súa fortaleza, que foi dos Condes de Altamira. O lugar foi capital do concello de Burón ata o s.XIX. Coa reorganización, estas terras que pertencían anteriormente á Asturias, da que aínda dependen eclesiásticamente.

Veredes á esquerda unha pista estreita que vos levará decontado ata a localidade. Outra opción é seguir un par de kilómetros máis ta San Pedro de Abaixo, e ao pasar o río (atentos, que veredes un hórreo á dereita e a igrexa parroquial, sen interese) e de seguido o desvío, tamén á esquerda para ir a Pobra de Burón.

No núcleo da Pobra teredes o que queda da torre que xa mencionaba, así como a igrexa parroquial sen moito interés artístico, unha capela e varios hórreos tipo asturiano.

Por aquí pasa unha variante do Camiño Primitivo, xa que a localidade da Fonsagrada medrou a partir do momento en que foi capital do concello.

Como curiosidade, os nomes das rúas: Avenida Lenin, Praza Lenin, Avenida Mariscal Zuchov ou Praza Dr Fidel Castro. Non me preguntedes o motivo deses nomes, pero ten o seu aquel, non?

CARBOENTES (RODEIRO, PONTEVEDRA)

Small romanesque church in the municipality of Rodeiro (province of Pontevedra, north-east). At Carboentes you will find this temple dedicated to Santo Estevo. Pay special attention to the stones which hold up the roof.

Pequeña iglesia románica dedicada a Santo Estevo, en el concello de Rodeiro (provincia de Pontevedra, al nordeste). En Carboentes encontraréis este templo; prestad atención a los canecillos que sustentan el alero del tejado.

FESTIVAL DOS XARDINS (ALLARIZ, OURENSE)

Galicia is not only coast, I recommend you to discover the inland, like the province of Ourense, the unknown.

This time I show you the International Gardens' Festival of Allariz. It's 20 kms. away from Ourense, by motorway A52 direction Benavente/Madrid.

On the right bank of river Arnoia, different proposals under the title Gardens of plenty.

You have time to visit them until November, and the price 2€ (1€ for retired and groups)

FESTIVAL DOS XARDINS (Allariz, Ourense).

Galicia no es sólo costa, también os recomiendo que descubráis el interior, como la provincia de Ourense, la gran desconocida.

En esta ocasión os muestro el Festival Internacional dos Xardins, en Allariz. Se encuentra a unos 20 kms de Ourense por la A52 dirección Benavente/Madrid.

Se sitúa en la orilla derecha del río Arnoia, con disitintas propuestas bajo el título de los Jardines de la Abundancia.

Tenéis tiempo para visitarlos hasta Noviembre, y el precio 2€ (1€ para jubilados y grupos).

PANCHA'S ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE (RIBADEO)

Galicia is also a land of light houses, you can approach to most of them. In this itinerary through the Galician lighthouses, I begin with the most eastern one, situated at the Pancha's Island, municipality of Ribadeo (province of Lugo).

Galicia es tierra de faros a los que podemos acercarnos en su mayoría. Comienzo el itinerario con el faro más oriental, situado en Illa Pancha, concello de Ribadeo (provincia de Lugo).

Las fotografías fueron sacadas en Abril.

RIBADEO (LUGO)

This small town is situated at the very north-east of the region, on the border with Asturias. The Nothern way of Saint James crosses it.

It's worth to walk its streets and disover the Art Nouveau houses. In this area are called "de Indianos" (Indian). The name takes us memories of the Galician who emigrated to America and come back at the first quarter of XX century and buy their houses in this style. One of the most impressive is "Moreno" house (Casa de los Moreno) at Praza de España (Spain square).

Don't forget to visit the harbour and nice restaurants and bars, with the views over the Ría de Ribadeo and the Ponte dos Santos (Saints' bridge, the motorway which connects Galicia and Asturias).

Esta pequeña localidad se encuentra en el extremo nordeste de la región, en el límite con Asturias. El Camino del Norte hacia Santiago cruza la población.

Vale la pena pasear por sus calles y descubrir las casas modernistas. En esta zona se llaman "casas de Indianos", que nos recuerdan los tiempos en que los emigrantes gallegos fueron a América (las Indias, de ahí el nombre) y regresaron a su tierra construyendo sus villas y casas en ese estilo. La más impresionante es la Casa de los Moreno, en la plaza de España.

No os marchéis sin dar una vuelta hasta el puerto con sus restaurantes y bares, con vistas sobre la ría de Ribadeo y el Puente de los Santos que conecta Galicia y Asturias.
